Just put windows 7 onto my laptop. I like it. However........

When I try to start up IE i won't connect. Troubleshoot comes up with this "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection"

Also now steam won't connect...

Firefox (which I started using a few months ago) connects just fine. I'm using it to post now. BF2 also connects just fine.

Helps please!?!!?!?!?! I miss my steam!

idiots. If your using a router open up the ports for what your using. make sure the firewall in windows 7 is allowing everything you want to go through. Make sure your internet is set up right. Basically just check what is allowed to pass or not be passed.

ORLY? Are you aware of the face that IE and Firefox use the same port to access the web? And that practically any router will not require this port to be opened unless you have explicitly requested to close it...

Also, Windows is smart enough to not block your web browser from accessing the internet, again unless you have specifically requested it to.

Please refrain from providing advice unless you know what you're talking about. Idiot :P

Back to business. Windows 7 does not block Steam. Practically any program that worked fine in Vista should work fine in 7 because they didn't actually change very much. Chances are, you accidentally blocked these programs in another firewall, something like Norton or McAfee.

Why would they all of a sudden start blocking them?

This message pops up when I try to start steam:

Could not connect to the Steam network.

It appears that you are not currently connected to the Internet, or that your Internet connection is not configured correctly for Steam.

Either check your connection and click 'Retry', or start Steam in 'Offline Mode'.

Actually when we set up our router it blocked everything and I mean EVERYTHING from gaining access to the internet.Blocked IE and firefox and blocked the cable modem. Like I said check the ports. which is why I suggested that :) ( prob when I had that router set up the the xbox only might have changed it so only the xbox could have access.

Ok, fixed everything. Theend is an idiot. Had nothing to do with the router. When you install the windows 7 upgrade it tells you to uninstall all antivirus/internet security shit you have and then reinstall them afterwards. I failed to do this. So I updated my internet security to the newest one after failing to uninstall it, and now everything is better.

Thanks easy.

You apparently bought the worst router ever. One that was set up to disable the primary function for 99% of people buying it.

I haven't spent any time getting into it yet. But it is definitely faster. Noticeably faster than vista was at least. As I spend more time with it I will let you know if it's worth the 130 or whatever it is now for the upgrade. I had pre-ordered it a few months ago from newegg and it was $50.

From what I've seen on the computers at work, it probably won't increase your FPS in any games if you switch to it, but for general use it runs much smoother and feels a lot faster.

Low end computers seem to get the biggest boost from switching to 7.

Talorn is my man-slave.
